Software Summary

The HealthInfoNet Clinical Portal gives participating providers the ability to securely look up and retrieve real-time patient health record information in a view-only screen at the point of care, greatly improving patient safety and care coordination activities.

Software Updates

HealthInfoNet has integrated PMP functions within clinicians’ existing HIE workflows through a partnership with the State of Maine’s Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) and Bamboo Health (formerly Appriss), operator of the statewide PMP system.

HealthInfoNet’s Clinical Portal now allows users with a role of ‘Clinician’ or ‘Clinician Administrative’ to easily review their patients’ controlled prescription medications in context to their longitudinal medical and social health histories.

For more information on how to access and view PMP information for patients within the Clinical Portal, users can visit the Prescription Monitoring Program section of the Clinical Portal user guide.

Additional Notes

Background Information on HealthInfoNet's Integration with the Statewide PMP System

The State’s PMP system was enacted to prevent harm from the misuse of prescription medications. The system’s integration with the HIE further enhances the program’s objective. A unified platform supports both the reuse of existing statewide technology infrastructure, and therefore the goal of reducing clinicians’ administrative workflow burdens, as well as the expansion and improvement of clinicians’ timeliness and effectiveness of critical care coordination and management duties.

Specific benefits to end users include:

  • Enhances clinicians’ prescribing practices and care delivery mechanisms by aligning medication administration with patients’ health histories.

  • Allows pharmacists to be included as a source of clinical triage within care teams and potentially prevent medical errors by assuring medication reconciliation happens at multiple points in patients’ care prior to prescribing.

  • Better informs the State’s opioid response plan and other involved agencies’ efforts, as well as meets critical CMS reporting and provider compliance requirements, by using standard data capture and exchange for state and federal reporting activities.

This work is the outcome of many years of stakeholder feedback and marks an important milestone for the State and HealthInfoNet in making comprehensive patient information easily available in existing clinical workflows to clinicians throughout the state.
