Consideration for Reporting on Race

Race values are self-reported by patients during their clinical encounters and are subsequently provided to HealthInfoNet in their raw form.
For the purposes of data standardization, HealthInfoNet maps and transforms patients’ self-reported Race values to one of the following categories: ‘AIAN’ (American Indian or Alaska Native), ‘Asian,’ ‘Black’ (Black or African American), ‘Multi’ (two or more races), ‘NHPI’ (Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander) or ‘White,’ with an additional ‘Unknown’ grouping for values that do not map to the latter groupings.
Additionally, HealthInfoNet displays patients’ most recently reported Race values in the Clinical Portal’s “Demographics” component. Meaning, if a patient identifies as e.g., Race = ‘White’ in January 2020 and then as Race = ‘Asian’ in March 2020, HealthInfoNet will display Race = ‘Asian’ for that patient.

Ethnicity values are self-reported by patients during their clinical encounters and are subsequently provided to HealthInfoNet in their raw form.
For the purposes of data standardization, HealthInfoNet maps and transforms patients’ self-reported Ethnicity values to one of the following categories: ‘Hispanic’ or ‘Non-Hispanic,’ with an additional ‘Unknown’ grouping for ethnicity values that do not map to the latter groupings.
Additionally, HealthInfoNet displays patients’ most recently reported Ethnicity values in the Clinical Portal’s “Demographics” component. Meaning, if a patient identifies as e.g., Ethnicity = ‘Hispanic’ in January 2020 and then as Ethnicity = ‘Non-Hispanic’ in March 2020, HealthInfoNet will display Ethnicity = ‘Non-Hispanic’ for that patient.

Updates to HealthInfoNet's Documentation

Updated the “Clinical Portal User Guide [Clinician/IS Support]” to indicate the addition of “Race” and “Ethnicity” data in patients’ “Demographics” component.
