eHealth Exchange Integration

Integration Overview

At the top of the "Patient Summary" view, the "eHealth Record" tab may provide additional health record information for the selected patient. The section incorporates available data from the eHealth Exchange, a national Health Information Exchange (HIE) network.

At this time, HealthInfoNet’s integration with the eHealth Exchange is limited to retrieving patient health information from the Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs, and United States Coast Guard.

User Authentication

In order for users to access eHealth Exchange information for their patients from within the Clinical Portal, they must have either a system user role of “Clinician” or “Clinician Administrative.” If users believe that they are credentialed with one of these roles, yet continue to experience issues accessing the integration, please contact HealthInfoNet’s Customer Care team via email at customercare@hinfonet.org.

Patient Search

When authorized users select the “eHealth Record” tab from the “Patient Summary” view, the “eHealth Exchange Patient Search” module will appear. This module pre-populates all of the selected patient’s demographic information into the integration’s search parameters, while still allowing users to make any necessary adjustments to the attributes prior to performing a search for the patient in the eHealth Exchange.

Additionally, the module has two non-demographic fields:

Field

Description

Purpose

The reason why the user is seeking eHealth Exchange records for the selected patient.

At this time, the Purpose field is restricted to select only the “Treatment” option.

Location

The specific providers available in the eHealth Exchange network for which the user wants to search for records for the selected patient.

At this time, the Location field is restricted to query only “Specific” providers - more precisely, just the eHealth Exchange’s Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs, and United States Coast Guard databases.

Once users have confirmed the appropriate search criteria has been entered for the selected patient, they can select the “Search” button to retrieve results.

When results return from users' eHealth Exchange patient searches, a record will appear for each of the available “Location” values selected. Users must then select the “View External Documents” hyperlink belonging to each of the resulting location records to open the corresponding health record information.

Supplemental Documents

When the selected location’s external documents load for the patient, they will be presented with a screen that looks similar to the Clinical Portal’s standard “Document View” component. This “eHealth Exchange Documents” module, located along the left-hand side of the screen, will include all relevant notes, reports, and results, as well as a Continuity of Care Document (CCD), for the selected patient that are available from the selected eHealth Exchange location. Users can navigate, view, and query the module just as they would the Patient Summary’s “Document View.”

Within each selected document, there is a “Location” field that identifies the source of the record to differentiate the precise location where the information is being returned from (e.g., Veterans Affairs, Department of Corrections, and/or United States Coast Guard).
